Cockatoos hang around in groups. They eat the leaves and bark from the gum trees and by the end of the day they are wasted, I mean seriously stoned. I’m chasing them covertly while the afternoon turns to evening and things are starting to get loose. They are sitting on a chain link fence in a suburban street in Lyneham and some are on the strip of nature between the road and the fence still picking bits of food out of the grass that’s covered in bark. Busy work really, fussing around the bits of bark. They flap about and yell at each other here and there. It’s actually pretty civilised here. Maybe because there are residents, humans who live in houses and drive cars.
